Nonlinear Optimization-Based Robust Control Approach for a Two-Stage Anaerobic Digestion Process

A two-stage anaerobic digestion (AD) process has been applied to improve the efficiency of methane production from various organic materials. However, performance traditional controllers may be limited by differences in rate biochemical reactions, uncertainties, and consequences interconnection between two bioreactors. In this work, a nonlinear optimization-based control strategy that applies an analytical model predictive (AMPC) scheme with adaptive optimal set-point is proposed for AD system. The objectives system are stabilize under uncertain operating conditions maximize biomethane production. set-points controller adapted real-time operation, then performed manipulate controlled output trajectories. Compensators state observers handle process/model mismatch estimate unmeasured variables. disturbances, fluctuations inlet stream concentrations, changes bacterial growth rate, investigated. Simulation results show developed automatically adjusts provides adequate actions maintain maximum investigation demonstrate promotes different avoids inhibition effect, handles mutual effects acidogenic methanogenic bioreactors effectively.
